Fiberglass vs. Metal Sculptures in the UAE: Which Is Right for Your Space?

If you're commissioning a sculpture in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, the first real decision isn't the shape — it's the material. Fiberglass (FRP/GRP) and metal (stainless steel, corten, aluminium) are the two we're asked about most, and they behave very differently. Here's how to choose.
Weight and installation
Fiberglass is dramatically lighter. A two-metre fiberglass figure can be lifted by two people and mounted on a standard floor or plinth. The same piece in solid or fabricated steel needs engineered anchoring and often a crane. If your sculpture sits on a mezzanine, a rooftop, or a suspended slab, fiberglass usually wins on logistics alone.
Durability and lifespan
Metal is the long-game material. Mirror-polished 304/316 stainless steel and weathering corten are built for permanent public art — decades outdoors with minimal change. Fiberglass is highly durable too, but its lifespan depends on the quality of the gel-coat and UV protection. For a 20-year civic landmark, we lean metal. For a striking 5-to-10-year hospitality or retail piece, fiberglass is often the smarter spend.
Finish and look
Metal gives you reflection — mirror stainless throws the sky and skyline back at the viewer, which is why it's so popular for modern UAE architecture. Corten offers a warm, rusted patina that suits gardens and landscape. Fiberglass, by contrast, can be any finish: hand-painted colour, faux bronze, faux stone, or high-gloss automotive paint. If your design calls for bold colour or a specific character look, fiberglass is far more flexible.
Cost
For the same size, fiberglass is generally more affordable — especially at large scale — because it's moulded and lightweight. Stainless steel commands a premium for the raw material, the fabrication labour, and the finishing (polishing a large mirror surface is skilled, slow work).
UAE climate note
Both survive the Gulf climate when specified correctly: UV-stable gel-coats and marine coatings for fiberglass; 316-grade stainless near the coast to resist salt. The failures we're called to fix are almost always under-specified budget jobs, not the material itself.
So which should you choose?
- Hotel lobby centrepiece — fiberglass (colour, weight) or polished steel (prestige).
- Outdoor public monument — stainless or corten steel.
- Garden villa piece — corten steel or coated fiberglass.
- Mall / event prop — fiberglass, or styrofoam if short-term.
